In August, Safe Words is bringing you LAUGHS in TRANS Nation, featuring Los Angeles based headliner Nina Nguyen, with a stacked lineup of Bay Area Trans Comedians. We met Nina at San Francisco Sketch fest earlier this year and are tickled pink, white, and baby blue 🏳️‍⚧ to bring her up to the bay again.

Join us at the San Francisco Eagle for a night of unforgettable lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender comedy featuring a lineup that captures the heart and humor of our diverse community. Frida Sierra

(@FridaSierraYeehaw) She/Her | Queer, Lesbian, Transgender

For over a decade, Frida Sierra has traversed the United States, subsisting on vending machine snacks and sharing her humor with strangers. Emerging from the Bay Area, Frida is known for her electric, fast-paced storytelling, sweating profusely, and speaking loudly. Her impressive credits include performances at the Santa Cruz Comedy Festival, the Savage Henry Comedy Festival, and the Great American Music Hall. Frida has shared the stage with notable figures such as Eric Wareheim from Tim & Eric and Tom Rhodes, along with a host of other famous comics who likely wouldn't remember her. Her comedic prowess has earned her features in The San Francisco Chronicle, Fox KTVU News, and KQED.

Emery Jean

(@theythemery) They/He | Queer, Lesbian, Transgender

Emery Jean is a trans comedian, known for, among other things, hosting the Queer and Women's Comedy Open Mic at All Out Comedy Theater, the Oakland Comedy Festival, and having no nipples.

Laughs in Trans Nation marks the third time Emery has graced the Safe Words stage, something of a feat for a monthly showcase - and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them back.

As a film-school-alumnus-turned-barista, you can also catch Emery for free every day performing a tight 8 hours at your local coffee shop.

Natasha Muse

(@natashamuse) She/Her | Queer, Trans

Natasha Muse is a stand-up comedian who masterfully blends wordplay into her jokes about being trans, being a mom, and being alone with her thoughts. Known for her sharp wit and clever humor, Natasha has graced the stages of numerous comedy clubs and festivals across the country, including the San Francisco Sketchfest, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and the Women in Comedy Festival. Her comedy is so good it’s not even funny. Stay updated with her latest musings and shows by visiting her website and reading her blog, the Semi-Bi-Weekly-Ish Check-In.

Binya Kóatz

(@binya_donethat) She/Her | Queer, Transgender

Binya Kóatz is a trans Jewish comedian, but don’t hold it against her. Originally from Queens, NY (where all the best queens are from), she’s currently straddling the Bay Area and Montréal comedy scenes, performing in gay bars, straight bars, and any bisexual bar her agent can find. Her comedy has been described as sweet and crude. Something for the whole polycule to enjoy.

If you want to see how funny she is before committing to watching her host a whole evening, you can catch her (along with fellow Safe Words Alumni Ted Donatelli, Rea Kapur and Weyam Al-Ghadban) at the SF Fringe Festival in her hilarious corporate-comedy sketch show, “Perversity, Equity & Inclusion,” on Aug 9, 17, or 25. Tickets are available at bit.ly/perversityhires.

Nina Nguyen

(@ninanguyens) She/Her | Queer, Gay, Bi, Transgender

We’re excited to bring you our Laughs in Trans Nation headliner Nina Nguyen! Nina is a dynamic comic hailing from Houston, TX. She captivates audiences by pouring her heart out on stage before swiftly detouring into delightful silliness. A finalist on StandupNBC, Nina has showcased her talent at numerous colleges across the country through NACA and contributed as a writer for the prestigious CBS Diversity Showcase. Her recent performances at Limestone Comedy Festival and SFSketchfest (where Nina first performed at Safe Words) have further solidified her reputation as a rising star in the comedy world. Nina's comedic journey has taken her to clubs and festivals nationwide, but she now calls Los Angeles home, where she lives with her supportive wife and their beloved cat. Follow her on Instagram and TikTok @ninanguyens for more laughs.

FAQs

  • It means you can set your own price, and we won't turn anyone away for lack of funds. While we segguest a price of $15 - $25 we've had people pay anything from $1 to $100 (looking forward to breaking that record!) Proceeds are used exclusively to pay comics and promote the show.

  • Like we said, what is important to us is to have you come and laugh with us. If you do not feel like you can afford a ticket right now and would like to secure one for $0, use coupon code “NOTAFLOF” - and if you find you have some extra cash on hand day of, you can tip the comedians on venmo or in the tip bucket. <3

  • Yes! If you show up without an eventbrite ticket we can accept payment in cash or via venmo, and there is an ATM at the door. That said, getting tickets in advance REALLY helpful and appreciated. Ultimately, we want you to do whatever allows you to show up, bring friends, and laugh with us! :-)

  • Our goal is to make a space for queer comedy by queer comedians, but every so often we'll book one of a variety of Token Straight Women ™️️ - turns out, being a woman in comedy is similar to being queer in comedy.

  • COVID continues to be a pain in everyone's ass - especially those in our community who remain vulnerable to the diseise. Masks and vaccinations with current boosters are heavilly encouraged. Masks will be provided at the door if you do not have some already

  • While the weather is cold, the show takes place on the SF Eagle indoor stage - but a live color video and audio feed is broadcast across the bar and onto the large outdoor patio. In future months when warmer wather can be counted on, we intend to move the show outside.
